Saying Goodbye is Hard To Do
Today on TWIS we said goodbye and good luck to our longtime science policy contributer, Dr. Michael Stebbins. Be assured that he is still neck deep in the weirdness that is the swamp of our federal government. In fact, I think he is now up to his eyeballs. It's been a great run, and we will miss his reports.
The show began with a discussion of climate change and the benefits of denialist tactics. We also discussed a few interesting science tales. Justin brought up bacteria in our guts, and I countered with a new microbe found in the ocean. Do you watch television? You might be depressed. I talked about the mechanism underlying how bleach really works. There was some talk about wide-hipped women and human evolution. And, the idea of hiding CO2 in rocks came up in the end.
Music on this week's show is thanks to The Four Eyes, The Carquinez Straits, Trebetheric, The Used Rugs, and My Robot Friend.

Are We Still In The Dark?
The election is over. Our country is still standing. We talked a bit about it all, but this show is about science people!
Justin started the hour with a fascinating story about cootie differences between boys and girls. How is it that we seem to know everything when we are young, forget it as we age, and then spend our lives figuring it out all over again? I talked a bit about ants and cars. Justin came back to bacteria. And, I discussed where memories reside in the brain. Then it was all about bird brains, tequila and diamonds, and an excess of muons at Fermi Lab (read more about it at Peter Woit's blog).
Music on this week's show is thanks to Johnny Brickhouse, Jake Mann, Trebetheric, and My Robot Friend.

Election Madness!!!
It's my ice cream bar! I pushed the little button, and believe that it doesn't mean the end of the world. Make your vote heard by doing the same.
I'd like to thank Dr. Mike Stebbins for joining us from a polling station, on the scene, in Virginia. Today is an historic day, and it means a lot to us at TWIS to be a part of the action. We have been accused of having an agenda, and I will admit it is true. Our agenda is science. Can you blame us?
Also on the show today, the special guest, science... Justin talked about crazy magnetic portals between the sun and earth. I brought up dark matter and PAMELA. That led to HPV. From there we considered the remains of Oetzi, a 5,000 year old mummy. Justin told us about a cool diesel producing fungus. And, finally I spoke briefly about water on Mars. We didn't have time for electricity on Titan, but here's the link.
Music on this week's show is thanks to Unbalanced Wheel, Anton Barbeau, Trebetheric, The Used Rugs, and My Robot Friend.

For The Birds
This week I talked with Ben Crockett from Birdpost.com about his really great social networking site for birders. They are still in Beta, so this is a great time to pitch in and help them make the site even better. I happen to think that it will be quite beneficial to those in the ornithological research world. But, it will also be an easy way for people of all ages to get into birding in general.
Also on the show, minion Mark clued us into listening to stars. Justin warned pregnant women about flax oil. I brought up Martians. We talked tape and x-rays. Gamma waves might be good for your kids. Justin promotes self-tazering for ambidexterity.
I'm curious what you all think about the scary aspects of the future: Robot armies and genetic censorship. Send me an email to let me know (kirsten at this week in science dot com).
Music on this week's show is thanks to The Exhibits, Jake Mann, Chris Taylor, and Johnny Brickhouse.

2) TWIS is starting a book club (twisbookclub.ning.com). We will read one science-y book a month, and then get together online to discuss it. Check it out, yo!3) The TWIS Forums are pretty and spam-free. That means that you can start visiting them again. The boycott is over. Thank you, Jay Sachdev for your invaluable help!4) We finally have XXL and XXXL World Robot Domination T-shirts. I still need to make them an option in the ordering system, but in the meantime email me to let me know what size you need when you make your order.5) The This Week in Science Archive Feed will be available soon. We have removed the older shows from the TWIS feed as a result of all the minion emails. However, if you enjoyed the older episodes, fret not, for they will be available for your listening pleasure in a small matter of time. Stay tuned for information. Donate to KDVS here.

Brains!!!
I think we were a little bit early for Halloween, but today's show pretty much centered around brains and dead people. Oh, yea, and politics (Thanks, Dr. Stebbins!).
First, there were monkey brains. Then, there were human brains. Then, onto dead peoples' migration routes. And, finally, dead guys' experiments into life.
Music on this week's show is thanks to My Robot Friend, Anton Barbeau, My Poor Kevin, The Used Rugs, and Unbalanced Wheel.
